So, yeah, things have been kind of dead around the old discord server and here on the website. I’ve added more channels and categories with topics to talk about such as games that I like or that are popular with other members of the community. We have channels about Dungeons and Dragons, Eco Global Survival, Far Cry Primal, The Talos Principle, Starbound, Terraria, Skyrim and more in the Other Games category now. Also in the movies and television shows channel under the Off Topic category I’ve put a conversation starter about some games my wife and I have been watching or re-watching lately. Titles like True Blood, Carnivale, American Gods and Bad Batch.
As I mentioned in a previous post, we are moving in a new direction. We may have started as a Minecraft community but we are much more than that. Yes, we still host a Minecraft server and may even add another one, but we are also people with a variety of other interests. One game alone doesn’t encompass what we’re all about. But, we do have a theme. We’re mostly Celtic based although other cultures interest us too. We are lovers of the Sci-Fi and fantasy genres of writing, motion pictures and entertainment in general. We love the arts in many varieties. So, we don’t fit easily in one particular box.
Admittedly, I went away for a while shortly after the fine folks at Mojang decided to go big brother on everyone with the 1.19 release. Someone recently asked me about that, and I unleashed this rant about the subject on the discord general channel in case anyone else is curious about what got my goat so bad.
Rant Follows
That thing they did where even if you’re running a third party server they wanted to monitor your chats and ban peoples accounts based on things that they didn’t like. For one thing, we have our own admins and moderators for a reason. We’re perfectly capable of policing our own chat and don’t need big brother doing it for us. If they want to police their own servers hosted on their own platforms I say fair play. But here, I am paying the bills and I feel I should have final say on what’s okay to say and what’s not. Don’t get me wrong. We’re mostly just playing Minecraft.
Nobody is on here talking about terroristic threats, illegal activities or inappropriate sexual stuff especially where minors are involved. But we wanted to create a space where adults could be adults without having to worry about some bullshit algorithm like the ones employed on Facebook and the like decides you’ve “Violated Community Standards”. This is our server. We set the community standards. Not them. Now, Paper, our server software, thankfully allowed us to not employ Mojang’s chat monitoring code which I appreciate.
But it still pisses me off that they wanted to do it in the first place. I mean, a whole fuckton of people who started playing Minecraft when they were ten are all grown up now. Sure, have safe spaces for the kids but on adult servers, let adults be adults. That’s my thing. Why hold people back? Granted, no one wants illegal activities and especially not mixing of adults and kids where sexual topics come up. But leave policing that to the server owners, not the software companies.
